Newburgh student wins oil heat dealers' scholarship
Andrew's father, Timothy, works as a driver for Proco Energy. Each year the Council awards a $2,000 scholarship to the child of an oil heat employee. This year the board awarded an additional three $1,000 scholarships. They went to: Cody Laden, whose father Shane is a service manager at A&J Hometown Oil in Wurtsboro; Meghan Lepore, the grand child of Brian Doyle of FW Webb; and Kevin Holt, whose father Mike is vice president of sales for Stormville Oil. Andrew, 18, graduated from Newburgh Free Academy this year and plans to attend SUNY Orange in the fall to study energy management. During the summer, he is working as a sports director at the Ten Mile River Scout Camp near Narrowsburg. Bill Fischbeck of Wallace Oil in Middletown, a well-known community leader active in Rotary, Jaycees, his church and fire company, died in 1999 at the age of 49. Eli Van Etten, president of the Hudson Valley Oil Heat Council, said the council feels the annual scholarship is the best way to keep alive the memory of "an oilman’s oilman." Van Etten is vice president of Van Etten Oil in Monticello. The HVOHC represents oil dealers and associates in Orange, Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess, Putnam and Rockland counties.
